UBmatrix Teams with IBM to Deliver Native XBRL Storage
in DB2 9
Upcoming release of UBmatrix™ Enterprise Application
Suite 3.0 to provide enterprise-class storage and retrieval
of XBRL documents
PHILADELPHIA, PA - December 4, 2006 - UBmatrix™ today
announced plans to offer support for native storage
of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) within
IBM DB2 9 databases for the upcoming release of UBmatrix™
Enterprise Application Suite version 3.0. The initiative
extends DB2's PureXML® data serving capabilities and
optimizes them for use by UBmatrix™ Enterprise Application
Suite, an XBRL-enabled taxonomy and reporting management
platform. Both enterprises and regulators using XBRL
will see enterprise-class storage and scalability benefits.
The key innovation comes from enabling DB2 9 "Viper" data
server with the ability to store both the XBRL metadata
and report submissions (instance documents) natively
in the data server, allowing operational and business
intelligence applications to interact using standard
SQL or XQuery. Without support of an XML database organizations
must decompose the XBRL data into relational tables.
The result is unnecessary and redundant copies of both
data and programs used to transform incoming information
into various systems.
"Whether you're a government entity collecting
information to oversee an industry, or simply a large
corporation consolidating financial and other information
from your subsidiaries, the last thing you want to do
is duplicate or shred the data into other storage formats," commented
Bernie Spang, Director data servers at IBM.
"The partnership with IBM provides a unique market
offering to customers seeking to deploy enterprise-class,
scalable XBRL applications," remarked Sunir Kapoor,
President and CEO of UBmatrix. "This is a key milestone
highlighting the benefits of XBRL for processing and
storing all types of information and enabling XBRL data
to leverage the existing software infrastructure deployed
in enterprises of all sizes."
A common use of XBRL is in the collection of financial
and other compliance reports by government regulators.
In this example a regulator will typically store a copy
of the submitted report (the "as filed" copy)
in a document management system and then extract the
submitted data into systems for examination and analysis.
This duplication has been necessary since data from
the "as filed" documents cannot be addressed
by the database, even when submitted using XML. The
combination of the XBRL metadata (or taxonomy) and XBRL
submission documents gives DB2 9 the information it
needs to query information right from the source.
"Our customers are latching onto XBRL because
the data is much smarter and of a higher quality," commented
Joe Pistritto, Vice President of Product Development
for UBmatrix. "The UBmatrix and DB2 teams have
been very enthusiastic about supporting XBRL at the
database level. The ability to offer our solution on
DB2 9 adds the enterprise scalability and operational
efficiencies customers look for."
Also included in the upcoming release of UBmatrix Enterprise
Application Suite are improved features for organizations
managing XBRL-based reporting. The first includes enhancements
to the discussion threads feature allowing comments
to be tracked at the taxonomy element level. This aids
design teams by documenting issues and enhancement requests
specifically in the taxonomy where the changes are intended
to be made. Users can search for comments globally or
zero-in on the topics they need to research.
The other key enhancements in version 3.0 of UBmatrix
Enterprise Application Suite are the improved reporting
controls. New to version 3.0 is more flexible control
over reportability rules. Using the data-driven panel.
report administrators can specify rules that govern
who is required to report and what information is being
requested. Segment reporting by geography, report type,
or submitter characteristics like company size, type,
fiscal period, and more.
Version 3.0 of UBmatrix Enterprise Application Suite
has been tailored to the needs of large regulators and
enterprises collecting XBRL-based reports. For more
